The canyon route is subject to landslides.Every train must be preceded by a hyrail truck to check for landslides.I rode the Pacific Limited to Portola,in 1991,and we were held up inside a 8000 foot tunnel while a slide was claared in front of our train. It got very smoky inside the lead coaches!
