I participated in the design of the current overhead contact system; post BART.
The support poles, carrying trolley wires plus switches, crossings, feeders, traffic signals, "Path of Gold" fixtures and three addition castings - the latter dating from the Exposition rebuild of many years ago, are oil field drill stem pipe; the strongest available. The intent was to have no non-joint-use poles.
We practiced all turning and crossing movements with a diesel coach, operator and supervisor, on third shift.
Galen Sarno was our Muni leader; thoroughly competent gentleman. He selected our team.
