BNSF has hauled approx 5.1 million tons from this facility since it opened in 2002. That's a little over 510 unit trains at 10,000 tons each. Surely BNSF found that profitable, you think???
Seattle area garbage is hauled to Eastern WA and Eastern Oregon by both BNSF and UP, a considerably shorter haul than Boise.
It is true that the Port of Quincy had some difficulty trying to establish an arrangement with BNSF to haul containers to the coast, so I would agree that not all short haul situations are viewed as profitable by the carriers.
The difference is that there needs to be a fairly consistent/profitable amount of business for the Class 1's to be interested. If Boise can generate the volume necessary, and Watco presents a loaded train to UP, the situation could be profitable to UP, if they price it appropriately.
