I was working that day as a switchman in the Richmond Yard. Actually I was on the Seaver Yard job, so didn't actually see the run, but heard it on the radio. I was really surprised they ran this trip, but I would imagine the decision to do so came from Los Angeles with some agreement and pressure from the PR Department on Sansome Street in San Fran. I know the Trainmaster there at the time, Mr. Groundwater, would have not have been pleased to deal with railfans and an extra yard job. He wasn't exactly the touchy-feely type.
