Re: Transbay Terminal (in the old days) - MUNI to the East Bay??

When I was too young to be asking about such things, in the late '50s and/or early '60s, I distinctly remember seeing some "inbound" MUNI streetcar destination headsigns reading "EAST BAY" -- not Eastbay Terminal or Transbay Terminal (as was on many of them), nor "FERRIES" or "FERRY" fot those headed to the foot of Market St. I noted it, because it struck me as unusual, since I was not aware of any MUNI service to Oakland (and I was always, even at that tender age, studying maps and timetables whenever I could get my hands on them!).
I ultimately dismissed it as simply an abbreviation for the East Bay connections available at the Transbay Terminal. But, could those headsigns hav e been in preparation for a service which never materialized? (MUNI did occasionally create headsigns for anticipated-but-never-operated service).
