I have to ( reluctantly ) say , the Sierra RR is the most FAMOUS shortline in the U.S. Reluctant, due to overexposure & near god - like status given to it by certain railfan photographers. Famous, due to its' use in so many motion pictures & television shows throughout the last 70 ??? years.
The subject of FAVORITE shortlines, is entirely subjective. Although I like the P & W / W & P RR, most would consider it a regional. Seattle's Ballard Terminal is my current choice. Only 4 miles long, SW - 1 for power, neat urban trackage yet views of Puget Sound & the Olympic Mtns are possible.
