Some of the control point signals on the UP have the ability to provide a restricting indication if there is "something" ahead of the train, but beyond the limits of the control point itself. This "something" could be another train, a track problem such as a broken rail or angle bar, or it could be a test for the crew. At least with this restricting signal the train does not have to stop at the control point and get flagged past the signal by the dispatcher.
