No, the chart doesn't explain that object down at the very bottom of the uncropped pic.

Turns out there was a dam where the river turned from south-flowing to east-flowing, just below the present North Fork bridge, to supply that powerhouse pictured in the George L Beam book. But no highway along the river there, and looks like no other dams anywhere down there.
