Good question regarding RR's and non - performing locomotives. Maybe it's a case of ' Money talks, BS walks' ?!? I recall that EMD's SD - 9043 - MAC - ACe - whatever, with the 265 - series engine, turned out to be a real lemon. All were parked when only a few years old due to major problems with the prime mover. Although the recent Trains Magazine article claims all is well with the engine now, no more U.S. orders have been placed. I'm guessing some spirited conversations took place between the RR's & EMD sales & engineering staffs, regarding warranty paybacks & future orders of EMD locomotives. The Trains Magazine article also mentioned the problems RR's had with the 710 - series engine in the GP & SD - 50's. No wonder that GE enjoyed the lion's share of new locomotive orders for 10 years or so.
