It was the 645F prime mover that was used in the GP/SD50 locomotives, not the 710G (which had no real issues to speak of). The 645F definitely had a lot of problems early on (such as crankshaft failures) which were a direct result of pushing the 645 crankcase and components a bit too far; those problems have since been resolved, and it's currently used in MPI's MP36 passenger locomotives (although there are still quite a few engineers who don't trust the "new" 645Fs at all; can't say I blame 'em). It's also used in "peaker" power plants and for providing backup electrical power, and on some ships as motive power or to provide emergency electric power if the main propulsion plant fails.
