A couple of years ago right around this time, I was in San Francisco for a professional meeting. I arrived a couple days before and considered riding the Altamont Express from San Jose to Stockton to observe the 50th anniversary of the launching of the California Zephyr and just to ride a train through Altamont Pass.
In order to return to San Francisco, I needed to tranfer from the ACE station to the Amtrak Station in Stockton. Unfortunately, there did seem anyway to transfer between the two stations using public transportation. The stations appear to be within walking distance, but both the ACE with whom I spoke on the telephone and one of the meeting attendees told me that would have been an unsafe walk. So I didn't ride ACE. Instead, I did a circle trip involving CalTrain from San Francisco to San Jose, Amtrak to Oakland Jack London Square and the ferry back to San Francisco.
With respect to cities. I lived in Washington DC when I interned for a couple of congressman in the late 1970s. While Washington has its problems, like other cities, I definitely enjoyed being there. Since that time, I seem to get to DC at least once per year for professional meetings. I feel the city has improved since the 1970s.
