Oil was a problem on Clover Valley. Former Superintendant Alvin C. Olsen told me that
at one time, the railroad fabricated a small tender which they put behind the 4 to carry
more fuel oil. When it was noted by management that this new piece of equipment lessened
the amount of logs the the 4 could haul, the experiment was quickly curtailed. CVL did
add the "neck" and I do not have a date. The point I was making is, that is how she appeared
for most of her working life, with the extra capacity "neck".
Clover Valley had trackage rights over the Western Pacific's Loyalton Branch to Hawley,
11.8 miles. They then crossed the W.P. on their own line and continued North up Mapes Canyon.
The 4 would exchange empties for loads with 2-6-2 8 at Camp 13 and then head back home, Not
positive, but I think one way mileage was about 36. You can see where the smaller capacity
of a tank type locomotive could be an operating problem.
