It's interesting that the demise of the Southern Pacific general freight business in California can be traced to a court decision dealing with rental of buildings. The SP had bought up a huge plots of land, built warehouses and put in rail spurs to each one. Everything fell apart when a company wanted to move in and use trucks for transport and not rail. Everyone went to court, and the courts said that SP had to rent to anybody, not just rail served businesses. That doesn't seem fair, since the Courts were an arm for the government, the railroad's competitor in the dispute. It's a shame they can't bring this one up again, since we need to get rid of those terrible carbon emission belching, global warming big rigs!
