The train departed Los Angeles on Friday as Amtrak Train 974 with the AMTK
73-74-12-75. It was running two hours behind Amtrak Train 14(15), the Coast
Starlight...until a major malfunction near Castroville, reported as an undesired
emergency brake application about an hour ago. The brakes have now been
released but the two lead Amtrak units are not operating properly and UP is
ordering the Amtrak crew to isolate them.
Discussion continues, with the broken-down Amtrak now blocking a UP freight (the
Santa Margarita Turn) stuck behind it on single track.
The brakes are now released.
Plan A was to cut the power and run it light to Watsonville Jct., nine miles
away, to turn and/or switch the engines. But that would still leave the
railroad blocked until the problem could be resolved.
Plan B is now the choice, instead. UP is ordering the Amtrak crew to shut down
the two lead units. The UP freight, with the UP 1901 in the lead, is to tie
onto the rear of Amtrak 974, push it to between switches at Castroville, run
around it, tie onto the Amtrak and drag it into Watsonville Jct. The UP local
is to cut and run home, leaving the Amtrak behind where it's not in the way.

Further report said the train was still at Castroville at 12:30 am, sitting still.
Good luck to the crews and dispatchers in getting this fascinating train on the move!
