Then it was a conventional yard job with an engineer. There's at least one on each shift in Oakland, and they use whatever units (including RCLs) are available. Sounds to me like they were hostling some road power. If they were going from RD-1 to RD-2 or vice versa, or going from RD-2 to the mainline or vice versa, they have to all the way out to Schellmound to come back, as UP removed the handthrow crossovers at 34th Street many years ago.
