How about just a slow train to Las Vegas ?

The Union Pacific has gotten away with not hosting Amtrak service from LA to Las Vegas, and SLC for far too long. This of course applies to Portland - Salt Lake City as well. So how about just a "slow train" from LA to Salt Lake ? I guess it sure helps to make huge campaign contributions to the Republicans! I am pretty sure that when the US Congress wrote the Pacific Railroad acts of 1862, and 1864, giving the UP and the CP a franchise to build a line across the center of our nation, that they wholly intended for passenger service to be provided in perpetuity. The UP was granted perhaps one of the most lucrative cash cows in the history of American business, and yet they get off without providing passenger service over the very main stem made possible by Federal Land Grants!
