One problem you may encounter is that scanners frequently are designed to operate with the weak signals provided from a rubber ducky type antenna. A good external antenna may overload circuits in the scanner if you are in a location with a strong nearby transmitter. For example, if you are near a detector or a control point, you may experience interference.
