Which is exactly why HSR will probably never be built or if it is, never be sucessful in the U.S. Having to stop in every podunk town defeats the whole purpose of high speed rail. Just having to go through every town makes it way to expensive to build, do to escalated real estate costs. The TGV makes it a point to avoid having to go through towns. That's why they can go 500 miles in 3 hours (Paris to Marseilles) Follow the line on google earth sometime. It bypasses Lyon (although there is a link to go into Lyon) and goes through Avignon along the riverfront. That's about it. It completely avoids almost every town in between.
