This the 3rd change of R.R.'s for this special so far. First they were to run on KCS and KCS said they couldn't handle the train. Why, I don't know. Then they went to UP and the route was going to be the Livonia, Alexandria, Monroe, McGhee, White Bluff, Van Buren, Waggoner, and Coffeyville Subs. to get there and supposedly it was O.K. Then the routing was going to be Livonia, Alexandria, Reisor, Little Rock, Minneola, Corsicana, Ennis, Midlothian, Choctaw, Cherokee, and Parsons Subs. Now it is on BNSF. On the first UP routing, one major problem is UP is having an 8 hour MofW window/curfew during the day on the Van Buren Sub. to repair Dabco defects, so the Special couldn't get through. Then, with all the slow orders everywhere due to extreme heat on the second route, it would have been so slow going that it really wouldn't have been worth it, too much delay from everything combined. As a result, crews are in short supply.
To Eugene, yes, the host R.R. is obligated to do all they can to handle any Amtrak train, but they can refuse, if they are unable to do so. I remember one time awhile back, BNSF was blocked in Iowa and Amtrak went to UP to reroute #6 and UP responded that they had their own derailment to contend with, trains were backed up for a hundred miles in each direction, and that it wasn't economical to accept the train on the detour route. In this case it was in everyone's best interest to do so for many reasons. It is not like they went to UP with this Special and it was refused without explanation on the spot. I believe they tried!
