If I remember right there is room for another cable on the sheaves at Washington & Mason carbarn since I believe they had 2 cables for the Sacramento St. line. So they could have kept the California Street line all the way to Presidio. But the slot was off center as they used a side grip and reconstruction was needed, I believe, on the downtown end of California Street. Besides DPW would have hated the conflict between the cable cars and one-way Franklin and Gough. Beyond Fillmore California is flat - not much to see for tourists. The Washington and Jackson line was much more scenic - too bad it wasn't saved. Similarly the lower end of the O'Farrell, Jones & Hyde line did not have a chance because DPW wanted one ways on Pine and O'Farrell.
Interestingly when they wired what was the 55 line on Sacramento they routed it over to California at Steiner, presumably to make way for some day extending the Cal Cable to Fillmore. I should live so long.
