Graham, thank you for the help here.
For anyone interested, in photo 1, the color image, that's Guatemala City in the background. Those 3 volcanoes, Agua, Fuego & Picaya (sp?) were all active and sometimes you could see vapor coming from them. The one on the left was quite close to Escuintla on the Pacific Division and the ROW up the hill went along the base. It was 3.6% leaving Escuintla and stiffened to 3.7%...16 miles of pull. The railroad tried out 3T Shays here back in the 20's & 30's, but they were too slow. 150 series Mikes, the backbone of the roster, were rated at 200 tons up the hill. The much heralded former Sumpter Valley articulateds were good for only 250 tons. They ended up spending much of their later years on a mixed local that ran between Escuintla and Mazatenango.
Anyway, a fascinating railroad that was most welcoming to visitors, especially if you showed an interest in what they did for a living. I was very fortunate to have experienced all that I did down there.
