Mojave was a storied crew base for both the ATSF and Espee for many years, but I believe sometime in the mid-1950's or shortly thereafter, many changes were seen. ATSF at some point ran through Mojave with crews beginning at Bikersfield and laying over at Barstool. Espee did something like that with their pools from Taylor going to Bikersfield and not stopping for a crew change there. The diesel-electric locomotive's fuel efficiency and no need for water was intsrumental in this change.
But, that's what I recall. I know there is
much more to the story than that, and I probably got some facts wrong. Correcting editorial welcome.
A few years back, the [
www.sphts.org] publication "Trainline" featured a neat article and impressive map of the enire location, with a very informative story. I apologize, but it is not at my fingertips, and I cannot recall what issue it was.
