Hey "J". I remember those days. I can provide the story on that one too. When SP had the great floods from Caliente to Bena (and a few other isolated places on the "Mountain") in the Winter of 1983, it became an Operating disaster. So, the Unions got together with SP and made a deal that 1, if a train was approaching Mojave and the crew had already been onduty over 8 hours, 2, if a crew with less than 8 hours was going to be held within a certain distance of Mojave to equal more than 8 hours, and 3, if a crew didn't have anywhere near that time (lets say 5 hours onduty), then the Mojave Trainmaster onduty would be contacted to provide approval for the crew to order a meal. There was a letter and number system assigned to each item on the Carl's Jr. Menu, this was unique only to SP. Drinks such as Cokes and Chocolate Shakes were just that, called by its name, and if there was an item that the crew couldn't remember the number for, then they would just call it by its regular name. Comming East (today's South) the crews were required to call in their order before passing Monolith and comming west (today's North) were required to call in their order when going by Oban. Needless to say, there were usually two orders, sometimes 3 or 4 if there were multiple Manned Helpers in the consist. These orders were called in via radio to the SP Mojave Operator, who would write them down, telephone Carl's Jr., give them the order(s) and give an estimate of when the food should arrive at the Depot. When the order was done, a Carl's Jr. Employee would walk across the street, hand the orders in plastic crates to the Operator, give them a receipt. Then the Operator would verify that the order was correct, then wait for the train to arrive and hand it up. I remember many times that there would be an extra item accidently provided and the Operator would usually have it, or offer it to some of the other clerks in the Depot. I remember one crew memeber ordered a Double Western Bacon Cheeseburger, without sauce. When the order arrived there were two of these, one with sauce and one without! SP was not charged on the bill for the extra burger, so a railfan friend of mine was outside watching trains, and the Operator walked outside and offered it to him, wich he gladly accepted! It should be noted that SP established a special account with Carl's and SP paid for ALL ofthe meals.
