As a 5 yr old youngster I spent much time in 1944 at my paternal grandparents home on Park way, in Piedmont, CA (across Dracena Park). I remember being woken up one evening by a sharp noise the adults assured me was just another harmless,though noisey earthquate. The next day I learned the noise was from the Port Chicago explosion. I can remember my father and I driving close or nearby being turned away by a lot of sailors (SP?) blocking the road.
