The southern portion (south of State Highway 4)of the former Concord Naval Weapons Station, now called Military Traffic Management and Terminal Services Concord (what a mouthful) will be sold off from the Tidelands portion (north of State Highway 4) to the City of Concord. Part of the cleanup is the removal of the old US Navy box cars. A contract was recently awarded to a recycling firm for the removal of 343 box cars. The box cars are now being trucked to a portion of the USS Steel plant in Pittsburg CA where they are being torn apart for recycling. The operation is easily visable from the street: Loveridge Road and Pittsburg/Antioch Highway.
