A DSLR is a must as far as I am concerned, for shooting trains or anything else in motion, as there is no shutter lag so common with point-and-shoot digitals. Back in film days I wore out three Pentaxes and finally moved on to Nikon. Nikon and Canon both make wonderful DSLRs and I doubt you can go wrong with either brand. I prefer Nikon, but it's kind of a cult thing between these two brands.
