And if you want to bike some abd. grades where trains still run alongside you, head toward Spokane. The recently-completed extension of the Fish Lake Trail now has a trailhead right below Latah Jct., as in right at the split at the west end of Latah Creek Bridge. From there, you can bike clear south to Scribner. Approaching Marshall, you'll be biking between two active BNSF lines, where UP has trackage rights.
From Scribner skip a couple miles south to the Fish Lake trailhead and you pick up the trail that heads south to South Cheney. This segment has BNSF and UP trains alongside you or crossing the trail on bridges.
Strong word of warning for ALL of these trails. Especially nowadays, there have been occasional vehicle break-ins at trailheads, parks, etc., in some of the more out-of-the-way places. Do NOT leave anything valuable or visible inside your vehicle.
