Many Class 1 railroads are now buying either Kenwood or Icom radios. Both are capable of narrowband analog, and narrowband and super narrowband NXDN (AMBE+2) digital. NXDN is capable of 6.25 kHz bandwidth in digital mode, creating even more channels than the 12.5 kHz narrowband requirement to become mandatory next year. I read somewhere that the BNSF is using the digital mode in the Barstow yard. If anyone has any personal knowledge or experience with the Barstow digital operation, I'd be interested in hearing any comments.
I have no experience with Icom, but based on personal experience, the Kenwood NX series portable and mobile radios work exceptionally well in both the digital and analog mode.
