1. Proprietary standard / not an open one like P25, TETRA, or GSM
2. All owned by ICOM - no one else

Stick with analog for the coverage in the fringes. You may have to listen through a little static, but at least you can understand it...not garbley-gook you get with digital.

Ever wonder why aircraft communications will probably forever remain analog?? Walk-overs at least in AM BOTH sides are heard. Sure, FM wont allow that with all things being equal, but still lower than normal signal the message still gets through.
