More to the story. Some, if not all, of the SDP45’s, along with some ex-DRGW GP40’s, were stored at Adrian OR, on UP’s Homedale Branch. They were owned by MK (MK Rail?) and being held for future business. At the same time, MK had an agreement with Helm Leasing for the latter to provide all sales representation for MK. This agreement did not give MK any exclusivity for Helm’s shop work; MK was required to compete for the business against the other rebuilders operating at that time, including Metro East Industries, technically not owned by Helm (wink wink…nudge nudge). Helm also wanted to control MK’s source and supply of used (core) locomotives and parts, an essential element for any contract requiring same. At some point, unknown to most (if not all) MK staff in Boise, Helm ordered the UP to move all of the locomotives off the Homedale Branch to a scrap yard in Nampa where they were to be cut up in entirety. When MK employees discovered what had happened, representatives from Boise went to the scrapper and identified components to be saved and transferred to Boise for reuse, including the frames from the GP40’s. With regard to the SDP45’s, only components common to other EMD models were salvaged; they were all unceremoniously scrapped in Nampa.
