Gain in not everything. Good selectivity, adjacent channel rejection, image rejection, dynamic range, high IMD intercept and low noise figure are also important.
When the old Bearcat 210 came out it worked ok with the provided antenna, but with a gain scanner antenna on a 40ft mast it was swampmed with pagers, TV and other signals mixing. I solved the problem with a three stage helical resonator filter and low noise high IP amplifier(with less gain, just a little more to compensate for the filter insertion loss).
