Chard Walker is a legend among U.S. rail fans, especially of the ATSF. I am also a train fan and have been for nearly all my life. But I have also been an amateur astronomer and telescope maker for almost as long.
How many know that Chard was an amateur astronomer before he was a rail buff? As the historian for the Los Angeles Astronomical Society, I have collected a couple of newspaper clippings from 1939 and 1940 that describe high school student Chard Walker's prize winning telescope. He was a member of our club from the late 1930s until the early 1940s before he lost his heart completely to railroading. Our loss is your gain.
All the best,
Lew C
