Or, the victim was forced to climb into the hopper alive. Closed spaces can be deadly all by themselves. Not sure whether grain hoppers are well ventilated, but a tank car obviously isn't.

And check how long time it takes for a body to become just bones, I don't think a few months is enough, more like years. I recall a news story about a forensics teacher who illustrated this with pig corpses, extremely unappetizing. Requires a really strong somach to bear to watch.
