Conrail ordered its SD-40-2's and GP38/40-2's with the pre-dash-2 trucks. Conrail claimed that the dash-2 trucks were rougher on track and since it's track at start-up was pretty
bad it didn't want anything around that would stress it more. I know that UP found that the dash-2 truck on it's GP-38-2's caused more wear on curves than the earlier style truck,
but wasn't bothered enough to not order dash-2 trucks, but did alert track inspectors and section foremen on some branch lines to keep a closer eye on curve gauge. Several roads with GP38/40-2's, including the BN, replaced the rubber "springs" on the swing hangers with the older style leaf springs during shopping to improve ride and curve wear issues.
