8924 was added to the point of an eastbound loaded grain train late last night (Tuesday 6/19) at Davenport. This train was going to be 66 loads 1 empty out of Hite and 8924's help was needed to successfully make Deep Creek Hill. Other units on the train were tunnel motors 2891 and 8702. 8924, as usual, performed well.

36 empties headed west out of Cheney early Wed (6/20) morning, but 8924 was left in Cheney. They will be picking up 11 more empties at Webb (just east of Creston) along with SD-40-2 3000. The two tunnel motors and the 3000 will be adequate power to handle the eastbound 47 loads.

This train will likely start moving east Thursday afternoon or evening and arriving in Cheney Friday morning.

L.A.Scrafford, to answer your original question - You might get lucky and catch the eastbound loaded train late Thursday. The empties are to be spotted at Hartline, Hanson, and Almira. If cars are at these places, then the eastbound move has not yet taken place. Unfortunately for photographers, this eastbound movement will likely be mostly at night, although it is staying light until about 9 pm.

While this will be that last big EWG grain train for awhile, there will likely be some movements of steel on the Geiger Spur. There is at least one steel load in Cheney now. It may move onto the spur as soon as Friday.

EWG's route mostly follows U.S. Hwy 2, sometimes swinging a bit south or north of the highway. It actually crosses or is bridged by hwy 2 at 4 places: West of Hartline (Xing), west of Govan (hwy overpass), at Davenport (hwy overpass) and west of Deep Creek (hwy overpass). Much of the route is easily accessed from county roads.

If you are coming east on I-90, Take state 283 just east of George northeast to Ephrata. It turns into state 28 just south of Ephrata. Continue on 28 to Soap Lake. Get onto state 17 which will take you to hwy 2 just west of Coulee City. Then go east on hwy 2.
