SL&U 751
The red observation car is Salt Lake And Utah #751. That railroad was short lived. Basicly, no money, no power, no trains. The car was bought and moved to California by BAERA where it was privately owned and repainted in Sacramento Northern railroad “Green”. After a number of years of service on the SN main and branch lines and the Western Railway Museum's mainline, she was finally repainted back into her original paint scheme at WRM about 10-15 years ago.
Regarding the famous three-car trip of December 6, 1952 (which was a horrible rainy day) consisting of SN 1005, SN 1020 (MW302) and the 751, it is entirely possible that the excursionists "MAY" have passed thru Birds Landing, CA on the original OA&E mainline.....
WHY ?? Because the SN's Lisbon trestle collapsed between Arcade and Saxon on July 24, 1951--about seven miles West of West Sacramento. About 4000 feet of trestle collapsed.
The trestle did not re-open to train service until April 6, 1954. Because of the trestle problem AND because the SN ferry RAMON was still operating until 1954, the SN eliminated ALL electrification North of ARCADE, and ALL track South of the trestle break as far as DUTTON, on July 1, 1953... GE 44-tonners were substituted.
Therefore, it IS conceivable that the December 6, 1952 trip in Solano County COULD have operated from the Bay Area via the ferry RAMON to cover the Solano County trackage under overhead trolley and back-up what the good Doctor tells us.. The Eastbay electrification died in 1957 and the wires in Marysville-Yuba City lasted until April 10, 1965..
