Poor transit schedules are retarding ridership growth in many US cities. In Los Angeles it is not uncommon now to wait 20 minutes after 8 pm on a Friday for a Gold Line trains and then have a single car train show up--standing room only. Poor transit service like this results from a mentality among America's transit operators that they run a "social service" not a "public service" as transit is run in most advanced industrial nations.
True it may not be possible to run services in all or at all times in a convenient and reliable manner due to budget limitations. But, there appear to be no budget limitations on how much we will spend to defend our dependency on mid east oil, or on health care costs to pay for the 52,000 killed and over 600,000 injured by the automobile each year. It's just a matter of how we set our priorities.
