Rank-and-file railroad union members don't pay into a union-sponsored retirement plan. That's what Railroad Retirement is for.
On the other hand, those who choose to go into management receive a separate pension directly from the railroad in addition to their Railroad Retirement.
And of course, if the railroad you work for doesn't pay into Railroad Retirement, retired employees don't get that and fall under Social Security.
