Shortly after the Milw pulled out of the Pacific Northwest, Weyerhauser acquired the Tacoma-Morton line. My associates and I had many discussions with Weyerhauser and the mills at Morton about resuming rail service. In these discussions, the UP had offered lower rates to haul the lumber to a reload near Napavine. No business out of Morton.
Along comes the "Train to the Mountain" people. They were convinced by somebody that the track could be upgraded between Tacoma and National, about 35 miles, and the transit time would be 1 hour. I told them it couldn't be done in that timeframe.
