Interesting, I sent in several letters of interest and resumes to the Sierra over the course of several months and never heard a thing back. Oh well, I'm off to work on the railroad with all the big orange engines now.
Dave makes a good point, it can be fairly easy to get a shortline job. I myself worked on 3 different shortlines before going to a class 1 railroad. The pay is not comparable, but, you get a (mostly) set schedule and you're home every night. Plus, you are gaining experience which will help you in landing future employment with the big guys if that is your ultimate goal. I personally believe a shortline is a good way to start out. You get the feel of the job, and if you realize it really isn't for you, it's easy to opt out.
