SP maintained the corporate shells of predecessor companies for many years. For tax reasons assets were designated to the different corporation. I understand that these different corporations lasted until the 1960's.

Red electric cars in San Francisco East Bay were assigned to South Pacific Coast, Southern Pacific, and even Central Pacific. Most were lettered "Southern Pacific Lines." The reporting marks contained the name of the corporate owner.

Similar things were done with equipment operated on the Cotton Belt line.
