The fire hydrant was most likely marked so the local fire department would know who was supplying the water to that hydrant. Same with maintenance of the hydrant. The hydrant shown may have been located on SP property at one time, and railroads were often ahead of local cities in providing fire protection to their own facilities. Santa Fe had their own fire engine @ San Bernardino shops.
