I'm pleased to see the discussion going in this direction. after reading that article I was worried that there would not be ANY support for Amtrak. The first thing that Amtrak and the railroads need to do is to take the schedule seriously and be truly ashamed of poor performance. No one enjoys being late, especially in this rush based world we are in. Travel is stressful enough.

Still, the railroads would rather that Amtrak would go away and leave them to do their business. Freight usually doesn't complain about delays. You get there when you get there and you should be thankful for the "Service". When a "Z"train passes an Amtrak train you know your place in the pecking order.
