I'm retired now, but was a proud member and minor local officer of The Newspaper Guild, AFL-CIO, during much of my working life. I worked alongside talented and hard-working members of the International Typographical Union. As a union member, I earned a living wage, not excessive but adequate and better than my non-union brethren. Then and now, I applaud what unions provide for their members. Without labor unions we'd be much worse off than we are. Margaret is right – we ought to be curbing not unions' so-called power but companies' need to meet Wall Street's short-sighted quarterly targets. The Knight-Ridder newspaper chain is a prime example of how a high-quality corporation was dismantled not because it wasn't profitable, but solely because it wasn't profitable enough. What this has to do with railroading is beyond me, but you guys brought it up.
