Another thing that can cause a kink to occur is a place where there is too little shoulder ballast, or not enough ballast and the stress has nothing to work against.
.
For an added thrill, try a vertical sun kink. Those happen too, one happened many years ago on a BN line in Colorado near my father's home town. Made his home town paper, photo showed a couple of SD-9's that made it part way over before everything scattered.
