Thanks for the update Matt. I can hardly believe the transformation of the Palouse railroads from the mid 1980's until now.
I attended University of Idaho during the mid to late 1980's when both Union Pacific and Burlington Northern actively served Moscow. As a break from studies, I became friends with the UP Moscow station agent and would occasionally pay a visit to the agent and train crews as they conducted their pre-shift bull session prior to going on shift. They were a fun bunch of guys with lots of stories and insights on railroading of the day. Unfortunately it would all come to a sharp decline. The Moscow agency was closed in favor of the 1-800 customer service call center. Wheat and lentil shipments dwindled with growers shipping their product via truck to Snake River ports. Then both BN and UP began pulling up various segments of rail within the city limits of Moscow. The remains of rail service are consolidated with one operator now (WIR) and rails to trails have reclaimed some of the abandoned rail corridors.
