Of all the safety factors that might have prevented this runaway (derails runaway track etc.) the most basic factor is running trains with a one man crew. One man alone has no check double check. Twelve hour days alone in a cab. Every decision you make goes unquestioned. no feedback. Getting off the train and tying up all those handbrakes at the end of a long run must seem like a major pain in the butt working alone. Did this railroad even have crew change points or did they just run trains until twelve hours were up? There is non union then there's jippo. This seems like a jippo outfit to me. I feel sad for the residents of this small town in Canada.
