Those EMDs were the GM6C and GM10B if I recall correctly. They were hulky looking engines. When I was railfanning around Kearny NJ in 1977 and early 1978, they would show up in Meadowlands Yard and I got some marginal pictures of them. I just never saw them on a train.

If I'm remembering right, their demise was more about Conrail not wanting the expense of maintaining catenary on the Baltimore to Harrisburg line than it was anything wrong with the motors.
