I also remember hearing about the depot possibly being demolished, or moved. But the artist conceptions of the project at ITD's website show it intact. Now, those visuals date back to 2004, but the latest report on this project, dated October 18, 2007, still describes the bypass/byway in the same terms. Go to itd.idaho.gov. Click "Highways," then "Statewide Projects," then under the map of Idaho click "North Idaho." Select "Sand Creek Byway" and then the Spring 04 Newsletter. Shows highway running north-south parallel to the track, sandwiched between Sand Creek and the depot. Would be right on top of the existing access road into that place. There's also mention of a retaining wall and widening to make way for a stretch of second main track for BNSF. Back out at the "Statewide Projects" level, you can also look at the various design options for the realignments of U.S. 95 around other places along the Funnel such as Granite and Lake Cocolalla. While the maps don't seem to clearly indicate it, I work with a few people who live up there who say they've heard BNSF owns the right of way under the highway along the lake (dating back to NP land grant days?) and that BNSF would like the highway relocated to higher ground so it can finally dig away some of that ground in order to doubletrack between West Algoma and Cocolalla. That would finally give them solid two main track from East Algoma (near the end of the Lake Pend Oreille bridge) to Athol. Don't know about noise complaints from the condo dwellers, but serves 'em right. BTW, there's now talk of a new mixed residential/light commercial development along the southeast end of Hauser Yard. Like all the other homes they're cramming up against the BNSF and UP in north Idaho, I'm sure someone will end up complaining, AFTER they have moved in.
