Many people will turn up their nose at the mere mention of DIESEL. Do you realize that Baldwin S-12 SP #1451 only fours years old when it was used on the Lakeview portion of the trip was re#2108 in 1965 and traded into EMD a year later? It was also one of the last SP diesels to come with Baldwin instead of B-L-H builder's plates. (Info per Strapac's SP Diesel Compendium)
Today I can think of far more opportunities to see a live Baldwin built steam locomotive compared to a live Baldwin/BLH diesel loco.
Photos show Wendel had an RSD5 and an Alco S-4 assigned at different times believed to be power for the Susanville local. Was 1451 already assigned to the branch and 2592 was brought in for the trip? I have seen one other picture of a Baldwin switcher on the service tracks at Alturas. The other possibility is that 2592 was branch power and the 1452 was brought in from K Falls as help. Regardless, any switch engine or RSD5 on the Modoc or Westwood branch appears to be rare.
